In the Homeric epics Penelope only says one thing to show the misplaced values of the culture when, from the disastrous outcome of the Judgment of Paris that lead to the Trojan War, when what is love and beauty was decided solely on surface appearances: Helen. The key to the entire epics, the very foundation of Western culture, its eternal Song--and shows its fault line, is when Penelope says that "Helen didn't know."
Artists see deep into the eternal and truths. They are able to excavate and mine what is real and bring it to humanity. Willa Cather was such an author, the Grateful Dead such a band. A person who just wants the appearances of being an author or singer shows what a culture values, and what that causes. It is a massive vulnerability to not know the insides.
And that is why Penelope simply mines and shows the internal: Helen wasn't able to 'see.' And it matters where Willa Cather and Truman Capote were concerned, and why Audrey Hepburn stepped in to change it all through Breakfast at Tiffany's.
